For the Freedmen (2026)
Description
Artist: Morgan Overton
Size: 22x24" original
Medium: Watercolor, Graphite, Cyanotype, Gold Leaf
Built upon collaged Freedmen’s Bureau documents, For the Freedmen treats archives of Freedmen’s Bureau documents as a foundation for imagining another future. The figure occupies a landscape where Black freedom is assumed. Looking toward the horizon, she embodies a act of self-authorship and the belonging that might have emerged had Reconstruction’s promises been realized. The work reframes the archive as a site of possibility, collapsing history and speculation into a meditation on liberation.
