No Matter How Hard You Try, I Can Go Twice as High (2026)

Earlier this year, I met a mother who shared that she wishes to see more art with positive and impactful representations of Black men for her sons. That felt like an assignment I gladly accepted.
This piece features a figure who stands in the duality of strength and tenderness, self-determination and openness. A butterfly signifies metamorphosis and freedom. The title is a blend between a lyric of the Temptations song, "Message From a Black Man", and a lyric of one of my beloved childhood shows, Reading Rainbow. In another 250 years, I dream of Black men being free and safe from historic and systemic constraint, and embodied in peace.
