I am struck by the concept of Afrofuturism: how it provides an imaginative yet hopeful utopian future - free of oppression, full of liberation. I can’t help but wonder if it is also an ode to a rewritten, untouched past. The elder featured in this piece is a projection of what I imagine what my grandmother could have looked like had she lived to elder age. She also represents a matriarchal figure of wisdom and love. An Adinkra symbol “Odo Nnyew Fie Kwan”, which means “Love does not lose its way”, embodies the essence of this portrait, casting hope for a future that allows love to lead.
