Each of these canvas portraits started with unprimed canvas, ripped in order to get a raw edge or some show the selvage (the self-finished edge of fabric). A section of canvas was gessoed in the center, and then oil paint applied to that taped-off section. A pocket was sewn into canvas for an archival board to provide structure, and each painting was hand sewn to that foundation.
